Looking for a cut and colour, a facial or a manicure, and happy to help the next generation of stylists at the same time? Grŵp Llandrillo Menai runs public hair and beauty training salons at its campuses in Bangor, Dolgellau, Rhos-on-Sea and Rhyl.

The salons offer professional, high-quality hairdressing, beauty and holistic therapy treatments. They are run by students who are studying for qualifications in the industry, and the students are supervised at all times by the college's team of experienced professionals.

Members of the public are very welcome, both men and women, and treatments are offered at highly discounted prices. The college points out that its hair and beauty students always need clients in order to complete their qualifications, so every booking helps someone towards their career.

Hairdressing treatments range from a cut and style and barbering to special occasion hair for parties, colours and specialist colour correction. Beauty treatments include facials, manicures, pedicures, make-up, waxing, massage, nail art and eyelash and brow tinting. Some students are already qualified and continuing their training, and clients can ask to have their hair styled by a trained student for a slightly higher fee.

At Dolgellau, for example, treatments include cut, colour, blow dry and perm, along with eyebrow shaping, facial massage, file and polish and pedicures. Appointments are available during the day and on some evenings at most salons, and some open during the summer holidays, half-term breaks and at other times of the year.

Behind the salons sits a busy department. Courses cover hairdressing, beauty therapy and barbering, and students train with products including Wella, Goldwell, Dermalogica and Tan Truth. The college works in partnership with the award-winning Francesco Group, holds an annual in-house competition, and says its students win regional and national competitions.

Correspondence is welcomed in Welsh or English. For clients, it is a chance to be pampered for less. For students, it is real-world experience in a working salon, the kind that prepares them to go on and run their own chairs.

Details of each salon and how to book are on the Grŵp Llandrillo Menai website, gllm.ac.uk.
