Mr Holt's Mônuts make Melin Llynon an all-year Anglesey destination

There are not many windmills with a queue outside at 8am. But at Melin Llynon, the restored windmill near Llanddeusant on Anglesey, people line up early for Mr Holt's Mônuts, and they sell out every day.

Pastry chef Richard Holt founded Mônuts at the windmill, and the doughnuts became a social media hit after a visit from American vlogger Kalani Ghost Hunter, who has 3.2 million followers on TikTok and called them "the best looking donuts I've ever seen".

"We always open every day over summer and close entirely over winter," Richard said. "Kalani came last October and we ended up opening all year round. He came back for his birthday in June and it exploded all over again. Queues now start from 8am, we open at 10am, and we sell out every day."

The windmill has had other famous visitors. Film director Celyn Jones, who is from Anglesey and made the hit film Madfabulous, was first in the queue one morning, and after a chat that turned into a friendship he invited Richard onto the set of his new feature, Mountain, filmed in Holyhead. "The entire cast treated us like VIPs and we had such a blast," Richard said. Celyn's young star Seth Isaac Thomas had apparently told him Mônuts were the best doughnuts in the world. The film, a coming-of-age drama set in 1980s Wales, also stars Peter Mullan, Iwan Rheon and Rebecca Lucy Taylor, better known as Self Esteem.

There is more to Melin Llynon than doughnuts. Mr Holt's also runs a Chocolate Factory Escape Room, the windmill itself, a Model Saffari and Llynon Flour, and sells boxes of its Petit Phwoars online.

This October half term, Mônuts and Melin Llynon are open every day until 1 November, and time slots for the escape room are available to book.

Richard, meanwhile, jokes that he and Kalani are now planning a trip around the world to find the second best doughnuts.
