Porth Tocyn Hotel near Abersoch named AA Hotel of the Year for Wales

A small family hotel on the Llŷn Peninsula has been named the best in Wales. Porth Tocyn Hotel, on the headland at Bwlchtocyn beyond Abersoch, was crowned Hotel of the Year (Wales) at the AA Hospitality Awards, held at Grosvenor House in London.

The AA praised the hotel's setting above Abersoch with fine views across Cardigan Bay, its attractive gardens, its elegantly furnished sitting rooms with space set aside for families, and its award-winning food, with both a formal option and a more relaxed menu. The hotel holds a three-star AA rating and two AA Rosettes for 2026.

The team said it was difficult to put into words how much the award meant. "Porth Tocyn has been in our family since 1948," they wrote. "A lot has changed here over those years, but what we're about really hasn't. We're still a small, independent family hotel and we care hugely about good food, proper hospitality and creating somewhere people genuinely enjoy coming back to."

"This award belongs to far more people than the four of us who happened to be in London to collect it," they added, thanking staff past and present, family and guests.

Four generations of the Fletcher-Brewer family have developed Porth Tocyn into one of Wales' foremost country hotels. Furnished with country antiques, it has 17 individually designed bedrooms, most with super king-size beds and sea views against the backdrop of the Welsh mountains, and some interconnecting for families.

The hotel has been recognised by the Good Hotel Guide as one of Britain's top family-friendly hotels for more than 30 years, and its restaurant has been in The Good Food Guide continuously since 1957. In the grounds, a self-catering cottage, Bwthyn Bach, and a shepherd's hut, Ty Cwtch, are available all year, and the hotel can be booked for exclusive use.

For a family hotel tucked away at the end of the peninsula, it is a fitting reward for decades of care.
