Stiff joints, aching knees and a fear of falling are often accepted as part of getting older. Physiotherapist Matthew Stephens wants people in Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham to think again, as the Rainbow Foundation's award-winning Active Futures programme launches in Ruthin, Broughton and Caia Park for the first time.

Many of those taking part are over 65. "People tell me they're too old for exercise, or they do their steps every day so they're fine," Matthew said. "Walking is good for you, but it won't rebuild the leg strength you need to get out of a chair or up off the floor or hand strength to open jars. That strength can come back, at 70, 80 or 90. We see it happen every week."

"Frailty is not inevitable," he added. "And once people feel the difference, they don't want to stop. It's become a bit of a movement."

The programme has two levels. Active Futures Foundation is a safe starting point for people living with frailty, chronic pain, arthritis or reduced mobility, or who worry about falling. Sessions focus on strength, balance, posture and stability, with pre- and post-programme assessments and expert guidance from a physiotherapist.

Once participants feel stronger, Active Futures Advance is the next step: a progressive community exercise class focused on overall fitness, muscle strength, flexibility and stamina, helping people stay independent and keep doing the things they love, whether that is gardening, walking, travelling or keeping up with family.

Both classes build in time to connect socially over a coffee, and the charity says that peer support and motivation are as much a part of the programme as the exercises themselves.

One participant told The Leader that the classes had dramatically improved his mobility, balance and stamina, to the point where he no longer needs a walking stick. "It's been incredible," he said. "I've loved it and am looking forward to taking it even further and joining the advanced class."

The Rainbow Foundation, based in Penley near Wrexham, describes itself as an Ageing Well Centre of Excellence for Wales.
