Sawna Bach gets the go-ahead to keep its beach sauna beside Rhosneigr

One of Anglesey's most distinctive wellbeing spots is here to stay. Anglesey County Council has granted planning permission, with conditions, for the mobile sauna unit and changing rooms at the Porth Tyn Tywyn beach car park near Rhosneigr, home of Sawna Bach.
Sawna Bach describes itself as a small family-run business bringing sauna culture to North Wales. It opened its first beach sauna at Porth Tyn Tywyn in 2023, the first wood-fired outdoor sauna in North Wales, and in 2024 it opened a second sauna in the mountains, on the shore of Llyn Padarn in Llanberis.
The application, made by Meyrick Estate Management through Cadnant Planning, sought permission for year-round use of the site, and noted that the business had created two part-time roles. In a decision notice dated 8 August, planners approved it subject to conditions, including operating hours of 7am to 10pm, a ban on hot tubs at the site, and the installation of a bird box and bee pole within six months to help conserve biodiversity.
The sauna sits in the dunes on the approach to the sandy beach, and the business's motto sums up the experience: Chwysu. Chwerthin. Cymuned, or sweat, share, laugh.
Visitors step into an authentic wood-fired sauna with the beach and coastline of Anglesey on the doorstep, and the family behind the business says it has quickly become part of the local community. The setting at Llyn Padarn offers the same idea in the mountains, surrounded by the peaks of Eryri.
Opening times vary through the seasons, and both the Anglesey and Llanberis saunas can be booked online. There are also special events, gift cards and a discount for locals, and the website lists local recommendations for things to do nearby, along with advice for families planning a sauna visit with children.
For anyone looking for a way to embrace the North Wales winter rather than hide from it, a session in a seaside sauna is hard to beat.
