Stori Brymbo's new Coffeehouse serves edible coal in the old Machine Shop

There are not many cafés where you can buy a bag of coal to take home and eat. But at Stori Brymbo, the community-led heritage attraction near Wrexham, the new Coffeehouse has found a sweet way to nod to the village's industrial past.
The Coffeehouse sits inside the restored Machine Shop and is open to everyone, whether or not they are paying to explore the wider attraction. That means locals can drop in for a coffee, meet a friend for lunch or settle down to do some work.
When The Leader paid a visit, the standout was an all-day breakfast bap filled with sausage, egg omelette and cheese, which the reviewer described as exactly the kind of straightforward, comforting food you would hope for from a café lunch. It came with a packet of strong cheddar and onion hand-cooked crisps and a cloudy lemonade.
Then there was the coal. Stori Brymbo sells its own bags of edible coal, small pieces of chocolate-covered cinder toffee finished with edible black glitter so they look like real lumps. Underneath the coating the toffee is crunchy and sweet, and the reviewer called it a clever and fitting addition to a café in the heart of Brymbo's former industrial works, as well as a fun souvenir.
The staff were praised as incredibly friendly, and the space as roomy and pleasant, the kind of place that could become somewhere local people visit in its own right.
Stori Brymbo itself describes a journey through more than 300 million years of history. The site is home to the Brymbo Fossil Forest, celebrates the heritage protected by the Brymbo Heritage Trust, and offers an event space and ongoing restoration of a historic landmark, all run as a community-led attraction.
For a village with such a proud industrial story, the Coffeehouse is a welcoming new front door, and a good excuse to stay a little longer after a tour.
