Wine from the Vale of Clwyd took a starring role on S4C this autumn, when Vale Vineyard in Llandyrnog featured in chef Bryn Williams' new series Cegin Clwyd Bryn Williams.

The six-part series follows the chef as he explores food producers across the Clwyd Valley, cooking seasonal recipes from his outdoor kitchen with locally sourced ingredients. In the episode broadcast on 26 October, he visited the vineyard, where Gwen Davies manages more than 8,000 vines. The vineyard also supplied the wine paired with the episode's main dish, a whole turbot.

Gwen explained why the site works so well. "The field sits on sandstone, so the soil is free-draining, and the vines thrive in those conditions," she said. "Having lived locally, I realised there's a microclimate here in the Clwyd Valley. We get less rainfall and enjoy slightly warmer temperatures than many other areas, so between the weather and the soil, everything comes together perfectly."

The ambition is simple. "We're aiming to produce one bottle of wine from every vine," she said. "Last year, we harvested around seven tonnes of grapes from the vineyard."

Vale Vineyard, or Gwinllan y Dyffryn, sits on the lower slopes of the Clwydian Range at Dre Goch Isaf. Its grape varieties include Solaris, Seyval Blanc, Cabaret Noir, Pinot Noir Precoce, Rondo and Divico, and the range takes in the Robin Goch red and Robin Goch Reserve, a rosé, a Solaris white and a sparkling rosé. The wines are sold online and at the cellar door.

Visitors can book a guided tour of the vineyard with a wine tasting and cheese platter, and gift vouchers are available. The vineyard is also heading into Ruthin on 19 November for a Beaujolais No No! wine tasting at the Assembly Rooms.

Each episode of the series sees the chef prepare three seasonal dishes that highlight the quality of produce grown in North Wales. The vineyard episode is available to catch up on S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer, with Welsh and English subtitles.
